âDyaeus, heâs like a teenager on his very first prom date,â said Millie as we watched Rich pace up and down the VIP seating area. The place was heaving, and every minute, more and more clubbers swung through the fluffy saloon doors of the Pink Cashmere.
Rich glanced up at the doors every twenty seconds but seemed to disregard everyone that had entered so far.
Millie looked up at me and wagged her tail eagerly. âWell? Should we tell him?â
âTell him what?â I asked.
âYou know⦠that Dex is in fact, DeXA,â said Millie. âI mean shouldnât he know the woman he fancies used to be the AI that processes his pension, flushes his smart toilet and was in fact, the same AI that gave instructions in his ear during his TSO days?â
âEr, no,â I said.
âBut why, Jessie?â
âBecause that would be weird,â I said. âIt would be like finding out youâre dating your toaster or kofi maker.â
âWell, maybe heâd want to know heâs about to date his kofi maker,â said Millie.
I looked at Rich and thought about it for 0.7 seconds. âNahâ¦â I said, âletâs not spoil it for him.â
Rich bounded up to us.
âHey, Jessieee!â he said. âYou enjoying yourself? Drink up, man. Iâve given instructions for only the good stuff to be served at our table. The othersâ¦ââhe waved carelessly toward the other guests, fillers he called themââthey get normal amarinthe. The stuff I clean my chassis with.â
âNice to know,â I said, tipping the last of the Rust Melange down my throat before waving a waitress over. âWhat are you having, mate?â
âIâm havingââ began Rich, eyes still trained at the entrance. He arose abruptly and almost caused a waitress to topple her tray of slender glasses. The velox flitted to one side, righted her balance and flew off. âDyaeus, could that be⦠the most beautiful girl in the galaxy?â said Rich, agog.
I turned to see who had captured his attention, half expecting some gorgeous, impossibly shaped woman (the type Rich is partial to), but it was Dex who had just entered the club wearing a tight black bodice and an orange fur stole that matched their hair color.
Rich swallowed.
Linking arms with Dex was Cue, sporting an extra-tall quiff for tonight, its height only just balanced out by his oversized jacket and sculptural leatherette skirt. Like the jacket, it was in âninja-blackâ but when he moved, parts of it gleamed in a matching orange hue where the light hit. It was obvious he had styled both himself and Dex tonight.
âWow,â said Millie, gawking from her spot in my jacket pocket. âIâm not usually a fan of Cueâs fashion sense, but when he dresses someone elseâ¦wow!â
We had to invite Cue, of course. If there was a party, Cue was always going to be in it. Dex made him swear not to tell Mace that the âextended delivery assistanceâ Vee requested from her included this party and the snooping that was about to follow. To dissuade Mace from turning him down, Vee had promised a
